Chicago Springtime Driving Tips

April 29, 2016
Berenz Law Network

Now that the weather is starting to warm up here in Chicago, you’ll probably be going outside and driving more often.

But while you’re out enjoying the lovely spring weather, it’s important to keep these spring driving tips in mind:

  • Be prepared for potholes and other road imperfections. During the wintertime, roads tend to take a beating due to heavy precipitation and the road treatments that come with it.

Therefore, you should be alert and ready to swerve around potholes at any moment. If you run through them, you may cause your car to become unaligned or damage a wheel or tire.

  • Beware side effects of allergy medications when driving. As plants come back to life in the spring, allergies also spring up for many people.

If you’re an allergy sufferer and you take medication for it, make sure there are no side effects that will interfere with your ability to drive before getting behind the wheel.

  • Slow down when roads are wet. Springtime is notorious for bringing lots of rain, which means the roads will get slippery.

For everyone’s safety, reduce your speed and increase your following distance during and after periods of rain.

  • Never drive through deep water. Another consequence of spring showers is puddles on the roadway.

If you encounter a large amount of water sitting in your path, it’s best to go around it or take another route. Otherwise, you risk damaging your breaks and hydroplaning.

  • Be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists. As the weather gets nicer, people will likely start to walk places or take their bicycle or motorcycle rather than driving a car.

The downfall of this is that it’s harder to see people when they choose these modes of transportation. Therefore, you’ll need to be extra alert when driving in the spring and share the road with everyone, no matter how they’re traveling.
