No Health Insurance? Your Personal Injury Attorney Can Help With a Referral to a Doctor

Even with the recent changes that have been made with the start of Obamacare, there are still several people out there who are unable to afford personal health insurance or whose employers are not required to provide health insurance.

If you have been in injured in an accident and don’t have health insurance, you don’t have to let that stop you from seeking treatment for your injuries.

When you contact and retain a personal injury attorney, that attorney may be able to refer you to a doctor who may be willing to wait for payment until you have settled your claim with the insurance company.

Those doctors will accept payment from the final amount you receive from the insurance company for your claims and will do so without sending any unpaid bills to collections and ruining your credit in the meantime.

Why would doctors accept the risk of waiting for payment? Each doctor can assure that they receive payment from settlement by asserting what is called a “lien” on your expected settlement or award to your attorney’s office.

You should also receive a copy of this lien in the mail. This lien requires the attorney to pay for your medical treatment upon settlement of your claim out of your settlement funds prior to distributing the remaining amount to you.

As discussed in my prior blogs regarding settlements and lien negotiation, there are laws in place to ensure that medical providers do not take all of the settlement monies and leave the victim with nothing.

In some cases, we are sometimes able to negotiate with the medical providers and ask them to reduce the total amount owed for treatment to save you money in nearly the same manner that the major health insurance companies are able to.

If you or someone you know has been injured and does not have health insurance, contact the Law Office of Philip J. Berenz today at 312-888-6058 and we can help you get to a doctor for the treatment you need.
