A jury in Colorado awarded a $3.2 million verdict to the family of an 88-year old nursing home resident that died due, in large part, to complications stemming from a bedsore approximately the size of a baseball.

Bedsores, or “pressure ulcers” as they are commonly known, are one of the more common causes of nursing home abuse and neglect cases that many attorneys in this area of the law come across.

In this particular case, the victim suffered from dementia, but was able to care for himself prior to the bedsores developing, after which time he apparently stopped eating, drinking, walking, and became unresponsive. What makes situations such as these so frustrating is that bedsores are entirely preventable, and yet cases such as these come up time and again.

Nursing homes owe your loved ones the responsibility to provide them the care they deserve, and to see individuals such as this die from something that is both highly preventable, and almost certainly caused by nothing more than neglect, is truly unfortunate and cause for concern.
